Insurance Information
Every SmartCar rental includes full basic coverage. This page explains exactly what is covered, what your deductible is, and what optional extras are available.
1. Basic Insurance Coverage β Included in Every Rental
The following coverage is automatically included β at no extra charge:
- βMandatory third-party liability insurance under the Israeli Motor Vehicle Insurance Law, 1975 β unlimited personal injury coverage for third parties
- βBasic comprehensive insurance β covers vehicle damage from accidents, fire, and theft, subject to the deductible
- βThird-party property damage coverage β up to the limit defined in the policy
Coverage applies to the primary driver and any additional driver approved and listed in the rental agreement. An unlisted driver is not covered.
2. Deductible (ΧΧ©ΧͺΧͺΧ€ΧΧͺ Χ’Χ¦ΧΧΧͺ)
In any case of vehicle damage, theft or accident β the deductible is the amount you are responsible to pay, even when the basic insurance covers the remainder of the damage. The deposit held on your credit card is intended to cover the deductible if needed.

3. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) β Optional Add-on

What is included:
- βReduces your deductible to zero (βͺ0) for Type A damage
- βAccident damage on the road (collision with a post, parking damage, traffic accidents)
- βUnintentional fire damage
- βDamage from external objects (branches, stones)
- βPartial or full vehicle theft (subject to police report)*
- βFull peace of mind throughout the rental period
- * Theft coverage is subject to policy conditions and is not guaranteed in all circumstances β full details in the rental agreement.
β οΈ Even with CDW β the following are NOT covered:
- βIntentional damage or gross negligence
- βDriving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI)
- βDriving outside Israel without prior written authorisation
- βDamage to tyres, wheels, external mirrors, roof and underbody (without special upgrade)
- βA driver not listed in the rental agreement
4. Third-Party Liability (Compulsory Insurance)
Compulsory Israeli insurance is governed by the Motor Vehicle Insurance Law (Road Accident Victims), 5735-1975. Every rental vehicle includes full coverage:
- βUnlimited personal injury compensation for road accident victims β drivers, passengers, pedestrians
- βCompensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, and pain & suffering per statute
- βThird-party property damage liability up to the limit defined in the policy
- βCoverage applies throughout Israel β including urban roads, highways, and industrial areas
5. What Is Not Covered β In All Cases
In any of the following cases β insurance coverage is void and full financial liability falls on the renter:
- βDriving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) β Also subject to separate criminal proceedings
- βDriving outside Israel without prior written authorisation β Jordan, Egypt β require separate policy
- βUnlisted/unauthorised driver (not named in the agreement) β Including spouse or family member if not listed
- βCommercial use (taxi, Uber, Bolt) β Breach of rental terms
- βOff-road or unsurfaced terrain driving β Regardless of vehicle type
- βTowing a trailer without explicit written authorisation
- βDamage caused while parked illegally β e.g., on a kerb, rock
- βKeys left in the vehicle when stolen β Gross negligence
- βInterior smoke damage β Minimum βͺ500 cleaning fee
6. Required Documents at Pickup
All documents must be originals β photocopies, including phone photos, are not accepted.
ID / Passport
Israeli residents: ID card. Tourists: valid passport.
Original valid driving licence
Must remain valid throughout the rental. Minimum 24 months of experience required.
Credit card in your name
Required for the deposit hold. Debit cards are not accepted. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
International Driving Permit (tourists only)
Required in addition to your national licence for non-Israeli licence holders. Obtainable from your home country.
